Willowdale, Book 1: Storm of Attraction by Lily Black

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're diving between the epages of a book I read earlier this week that took me by storm...pun totally intended and OH SO ON TARGET!  It's the first release in the Willowdale series from author Lily Black and while new on the writing scene, her writing comes off as old in her written voice sounds MUCH more experienced.  Let's not just speculate about it though, shall we?  It's time to get on with the show!  Ready or not, today's ebook of choice is...

Willowdale, Book 1
Lily Black
Red Adept Publishing

About the book...
Alexa Wolving has just one rule: never give a guy a second chance. That works just fine in the safe life she’s built. In the charming town of Willowdale, her day job as a librarian balances perfectly with her evening job as a black belt instructor. But when she attracts the attention of a stalker, Alexa’s carefully built world begins to crumble.

Drew Cosimo knows he broke Alexa’s heart five years ago when he took his first Ranger assignment and disappeared from her life. Now that he’s out of the army, he’s moving back home to Willowdale. He’s not looking for a fight, but making peace would be easier if Alexa hadn’t told the entire town he was a money-grubbing jerk. Despite the tension between them, Drew is quick to offer his protection when a stalker forces Alexa from her home.

As the stalker’s attacks escalate, Alexa and Drew are forced to face their painful past and the simmering attraction between them. They must fight to save each other before everything they care about goes up in flames.

Here's the deal...
...this is my site, and I like to keep it "real", so my reactions, while completely my own, may not always sound like the glowing praise of a professional reviewer, nor the burning scorn of a non fan...but you can trust that they are my HONEST opinion from start to finish.  Now that we've established that...

At first glance, I was not enamored with this book.  Taking the cover and the synopsis into account, I thought it might lean too much towards the scary stalker story and leave no room for the potential romance, and though in the past I loved me some Crime Fiction, I've strayed away from it on the regular more recently.  Hey, you already knew that my reviews were scattered across the board.  I refuse to be pigeonholed into one particular niche or another, letting my interest in a title guide me towards or away from any book that crosses my path.  HOWEVER, something about this one called to me despite my initial trepidation and guess what?  I'm OH SO GLAD I heeded that call!

Once I began reading, I just couldn't stop.  Alexa was a strong female lead, and while she could seriously kick some booty if need be (and it definitely "need be" at some point in this book), it was nice to see her considering other options, like giving a particular blast from her past another chance even though she is staunchly against do overs when it comes to relationships.  Hey, I'm not saying she's going to make it easy or that she actually succumbs to those feelings still sizzling away after all these years, but even the moment's thought she gives it is a triumph when considering her past.  Drew, on the other hand, could fulfill all your military man dreams in the blink of an eye...too bad he's stubbornly hung up on the only girl that really got beneath his skin.  Why too bad?  Because, as I said, she's not going to make it easy, nor does he really deserve it to be with the exit strategy he employed the last time they were in each other's lives.  Guess it's a good thing fate (and a crazy butt stalker!  Eeek!) is pushing them together (and testing their limits of self control) despite the imminent danger they are BOTH in....

In the end, it was a thrilling rush of a read that while filled with heart stopping action (it just keeps escalating!), danger (crazy stalker alert!), and suspense (who is more wily, the stalker or them?), still held enough battles of the heart to keep a romance fan's hopes alive and well.  Definitely a must read that should be on your reading list this summer as well as a new series to stay abreast of in the coming months.

About the author...

Lily Black believes in true love, but she is also quite certain that going after it is the scariest thing we'll ever do. She explores this dynamic in her romantic suspense novels, which are set in the small imaginary town of Willowdale, where people dream big, love deeply, and kick butt if necessary.

Lily has a black belt in Chung Do Kwan Tai Kwon Do, and she has also trained in everything from judo to broadswords. She lives in North Carolina, where she tries to divide her free time between the mountains and the sea. She shares her home with a very patient and loving husband and their teenage daughter.

Torte―everybody’s favorite small-town family bakeshop―is headed for the high seas, where murder is about to make a splash. . . Jules Capshaw is trying to keep her cool as Torte gets set to make its transformation from quaint, local confectionary café to royal pastry palace. Meanwhile, Jules’s estranged husband Carlos is making a desperate plea for her to come aboard his cruise ship and dazzle everyone with her signature sweets. She may be skeptical about returning to her former nautical life with Carlos but Jules can’t resist an all-expense-paid trip, either. If only she knew that a dead body would find its way onto the itinerary . .
Now, instead of enjoying tropical drinks on deck between whipping up batches of sea-salted chocolates and flambéing fresh pineapple slices in the kitchen, Jules is plunged into dangerous waters. Her investigation leaves her with more questions than answers: Why can’t anyone on board identify the young woman? And how can she help Carlos keep passengers at ease with a killer in their midst? Jules feels like she’s ready to jump ship. Can she solve this case without getting in too deep?

The Scent of Rain by Anne Montgomery

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.

Today, we're journeying through the pages of a Young Adult release via Treehouse Publishing Group.  It came to my attention thanks to Sarah at Smith Publicity, Inc, and let me tell you, I'm SO glad it did!  It was quite the ride from start to finish, never letting go, never letting you catch your breath, never letting you forget that these things, or at least similar things, actually happen in our day and age.  It's simply mind boggling, but before I get too far ahead of myself, allow me to introduce today's book of choice my name...

The Scent of Rain
Anne Montgomery
Treehouse Publishing Group

About the book...
Rose Madsen will do anything to keep from being married off to one of the men in her Fundamentalist Mormon (FLDS) community, even endure the continued beatings and abuse of her mother. But when her mentally handicapped baby sister is forced to strangle the bird she loves at the behest of the Prophet, Rose frees the bird and runs away.

Adan Reyes will do anything to escape the abusive foster care system in Phoenix, even leaving his good friends and successful high school athletic career behind him. Ill-prepared for surviving the desert, Adan hits the road only to suffer heat stroke. Found by a local handyman, he catches a glimpse of a mysterious girl--Rose--running through town, and follows her into the mountains where they are both tracked and discovered by the men of the FLDS community.

With their fates now intertwined, can Rose and Adan escape the systems locking them into lives of abuse? Will Rose be forced to marry the Prophet, a man her father's age, and be one of dozens of wives, perpetually pregnant, with no hope for an education? Will Adan be returned to the foster home where bullying and cruelty are common? Is everyone they meet determined to keep them right where they belong or are some adults worthy of their trust?

How I felt about this novel was hard to put into words. Okay, so it wasn't so hard to actually say words about it, but other than simply mouthing off about the cruelty of it all, the injustice no matter which way you turned, and the audacity that seemed to reign supreme, I was having a difficult time.

Right from the start I was in utter shock at what was happening for both of our leads.  Young Adan is on the run, but from exactly who or why, we aren't certain....what we are certain about is his eminent demise if he doesn't get help and FAST.  It seems in his pursuit of escape, he failed to factor in the details that could quite literally kill him.  Little miss Rose has dreams like any other young lady, but in her community, those dreams lack substance more than wishes on stars.  They are impossibilities due to their beliefs, and leader...and oh how I use that term loosely because honestly, I just can't wrap my mind around it even now!

Image result for evil shadow

The things asked, no wait, lawed to be done and do are beyond reason, beyond measure, beyond comprehension!  He's a monster given "powers" and authority no one should have nor have the right to give.  Every word he speaks, every decree he gives, every time he opens his hideous mouth and the ugliness within escapes into the world, one more moment of loveliness, one moment of truth, one moment of beauty dies a horrible death. The fact that these two youths are able to even attempt to stand against "his might" just goes to prove that seemingly unlimited power is only unlimited until someone else squashes you like the bug you are.  Does that happen here?  I can't confirm of deny, but I will say that many people get what's coming to them in the end...for better AND worse.

Though the characters are key to truly feeling this tale, the story itself is nothing to balk at.  We have issues of teen runaways, extreme religious beliefs, and abuse handled head on but with grace.  Some of the adults provide an extended look into how things became this way and why they continue on, while others are voices for change.  It's not about faith bashing, but exposing those practices kept as dirty little secrets to the light of day, some of which aren't simply what I'd call a backwards way of thinking, but true and actual health issues that need not exist.  Emotional abuse is as bad as physical abuse, and while bruises fade, the mind tends to hold on to things strongly.  Learning at book's end that much of the story was inspired by the author's interview with FLDS escapee Flora Jessop, gave the gut wrenching tale even more least for this reader.

So, if you're looking for a story that has two leads that won't let anything stand between them and freedom of the heart and mind, this book's for you.  If you like stories that delve into the darker corners of religious sects and "traditions" hoping to gain a sympathetic ear for those still struggling in its grasp, this book's for you.  If you're simply looking for a powerful story that will rock you to your core in so SO many ways, THIS BOOK IS FOR YOU.

BOOK BIRTHDAY: Beach House for Rent by Mary Alice Monroe

Hi there!
Welcome back to Satisfaction for Insatiable Readers.
Image result for raining
A late night edition of our usual review fair brought to you from the sunny beaches of Florida...or rather the LIQUID sunshine filled streets of Florida.  Yep.  It's been a rainy messy day from start to...well, now...with no end in sight (looks like a tropical storm about a 100 miles away from us or so is bringing all the rain), but that doesn't mean the reading has to be dismal too, and with today's BOOK BIRTHDAY celebrant, there's no way it could be.
Today, we're celebrating the release of the latest from author Mary Alice Monroe via Gallery Books.  It came to my attention thanks to Meg the fabulous (okay, I added the "title", but in truth...she is!) over at Tandem Literary  and it happens to be the fourth in the author's Beach House series (which I did NOT know until writing this post...*adds to must read list*).  Good news!  It reads rather well as a stand alone, so I'm thinking they are connected more in setting and community than actual storyline.  Anywho, if you're ready to escape to the breezy shores along the Isle of Palms (it even SOUNDS dreamy!), then I suggest you pack your overnight bag and follow me, because today's title in on deck...
Beach House, Book 4

Gallery Books
About the book...
New York Times bestselling author Mary Alice Monroe returns to her beloved Isle of Palms to tell the poignant, charming story of two women, one summer, and one very special beach house.
When Cara Rutledge rents out her quaint beach house on Isle of Palms to Heather Wyatt for the entire summer, it’s a win-win by any standard: Cara’s generating income necessary to keep husband Brett’s ecotourism boat business afloat, and anxiety-prone Heather, an young artist who’s been given a commission to paint birds on postage stamps, has a quiet space in which to work and tend to her pet canaries uninterrupted.
It isn’t long, however, before both women’s idyllic summers are altered irrevocably: the alluring shorebirds—and the man who rescues them—begin to draw Heather out of the shell she’s cultivated toward a world of adventure, and maybe even love; at the same time, Cara’s life reels with sudden tragedy, and she wishes only to return to the beach house that had once been her port amidst life’s storms. When Heather refuses to budge from her newfound sanctuary, so begins the unlikeliest of rooming situations. While they start out as strangers, as everything around the women falls apart they learn that the only thing they can really rely on is each other.
And, like the migrating shorebirds that come to the island for the summer, these two women of different generations must rediscover their unique strengths so by summer’s end they, too, can take flight in ways they never imagined possible.

The culture, the community, the unexpected but totally deserved stand for your friend moments that warm your heart, and even the heartbreak... it all adds up to a wonderful read.

When this title arrived on my doorstep, my reaction was split down the middle.  First, I jumped for joy because...HELLO!  A surprise book arrival ON MY DOORSTEP that sounds promising?  What's not to be ELATED about?  Then...I saw the release date.  June.  Oh boy.  Why "oh boy"? calendar for summer has been a bit booked (pardon the pun), so I couldn't figure how I would ever squeeze it in in time.  So yes...I was of two minds, but then I did something I don't often do.  I sampled the story.  Yep.  I opened the book to just read a few paragraphs and get a feel for what I was in store for...and guess what?  I never looked back.

Image result for light in darkness

Once I started, I simply couldn't stop.  I immediately formed a bond with Heather (in more ways than I care to reveal) and found her pursuit of life beyond her usual limits, enchanting despite the every-moment-being-a-struggle aspect.  The connection she has with her birds is charming; the one she unexpectedly finds with a certain young man, wonderful. The caretaker, and eventual friend, Cara Rutledge couldn't have been a kinder soul, even when faced with tragedy.  Yes, she slid into a dark place, but sometimes in that darkness is where we discover not only our own inner light but the light of others that we simply need to let in in order to pull ourselves back to the here and now.  Through Heather's and Cara's life experiences, they are able to find a common ground, rediscovering their own passions and the desire to not simply survive, but live remarkably, and that my friends is a beautiful thing.

In the end, the surprising beauty of the story will sweep you away, while the tenderness shown will leave you gasping for air.  You'll shed tears, laugh without reserve, marvel at nature's wonders, and in the end, want to call these ladies (and others) well as the isle, home.  Recommended for Women's Fiction fans the world over.
